Counselling and Psychotherapy. Research in Training and Professional Practice", 23-25th of September at the University of Innsbruck
Dear friends of psychodrama research,
Dear Research Committee,
I just came back from the SPR Conference (Society for Psychotherapy Research) at the University in Bern, where more than 700 researchers from all over the world - were presenting their research in psychotherapy. And - of course - our research committee was well represented too. Thanks to Ines Testoni, Maria Silvia Guglielmin, Galabina Tarashoeva, Gabriela Moita, Jutta Fürst, Fabian Blöbel and Michael Wieser we could present and discuss different psychodrama research projects.
Our next big step this year will be the research symposium on "Counselling and Psychotherapy
Research in Training and Professional Practice", 23-25th of September at the University of Innsbruck
This symposium is a cooperation between our research committee/ FEPTO and the University of Innsbruck. During this symposium we will have the opportunity to present, discuss and develop our research projects.
In order to meet different needs from the various projects, we have created three different formats of presentations/ workshops:
- 1) projects which are almost or already finished (objectives of the project, the data and the analysis of the data, some results, conclusions etc.)
-2) projects which are work in progress (or which exist as an interesting idea etc.): We will offer a "research intervision lab". In this group we will provide time and space to present the status of the project/ the idea and to develop further steps. The group will work on challenges, questions or problems regarding the project/ the idea etc.
Furthermore we will have one research coach who also will try to give support to develop the project/ the idea further.
- 3) small group work for project groups who need the time to develop/to organize their own project further (like the small group work we had already at our last meetings)
If you think that your project fits into this frame you can tell us what you want to present or discuss. Therefore we need a
Short description of your presentation/ workshop:
Title of the project:
name/s: who will present/ discuss?
abstract: (8-15 lines about: goals, content, method...)
format: - presentation, - research lab, - small group, (-other format?)
additional information: If you present your research work in progress...
- tell us the questions/ challenges of research you are facing and which you want to address
- tell us if you need any specific support.
!!! Please send these information until 31st of July !!!
As soon I will get your feedback we can finalize the programme. Please
let us know, if you have wishes regarding the programme for the symposium.
Best wishes to all of you,
Hannes

The last Fepto Research Committee meeting was held in Boldern/Switzerland, 26-28 February, 2010. The place and work orientations were chosen taken into account the Marie Cassel RC Evaluation Form filled after Taormina meeting
Sirkka Varonen was responsible for the last choice of the place, which was a quiet and cosy hotel in the mountains near Zurich. We were 22 participants that represented 9 countries working in psychodrama research issues. Along with the work, we get secondary benefits of the group meeting: fun, exchange, encounter, and belonging feeling. This meeting had two main aims:
1 - To go deep in the projects already began
2 – To do exchanges of the work already done by the groups
Therefore, FEPTO has now the following research lines which congregate, so far, the different needs and motivations of the participant members.
A. RESEARCH CONCERNING TRAINING & PSYCHODRAMA CONCEPTS, PRACTICAL METHODS AND RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS
Group 1 – Evaluation Training: Ann Helleday (Sweden); Emre Kapkin (Turkey); José Luís Mesquita (Portugal); Sirkka Varonen (Switzerland/Finland);
This group continued to improve the produced questionnaire to evaluate the training, more specifically the competences on psychodrama of trainees (ECP-30). A first application was attended after Taormina meeting.
In this meeting, the group was analysing the results of the pilot study, and find out and ways to develop the form.
To improve the instrument, a second application will be done. After these results it will be decided if it will be spread out to the FEPTO communities.
Group 2 – Evaluation of Supervision and study on Effects of Supervision in PD Training Group 3 - Identity, Theory And Practice Of Psychodrama, As It Was Created By Moreno
Hannes Krall (Austria) Jutta Fürst (Austria) + Daniel Reggianini (Italy); Gabriela Moita (Portugal); Marco Greco (Italy)
Both groups worked together in this meeting for exchange of ideas and common reflections about the topics involving their own research works.A questionnaire to evaluate Supervision in PD Training presented by Jutta and Hannes was discussed. Austria, Portugal and Italy will try to use this tool in order to be studied.
The previous group, in Taormina designed a research design (TRAIN) to be implemented in different countries by our trainees: the implementation of Robert Elliott Hermeneutic Single Case Efficacy Design (HSCED) + Spontaneity Assessment Inventory-Revised (SAI-R) + Moreno Social Atom Projective Test (MSAPT) what was also discussed.
Following the idea of collecting thoughts and positions about different Morenian concepts, emerged the shared consciousness of the need to achieve a more clearly semantic definition, a deeper conceptual reflection and, at the end, a theoretical and methodological development of some of the basic morenian assessments.
The group confirmed the goal consisting of creating a network of psychodramatists interested in sharing and comparing ideas concerning the matter.
B. RESEARCHING PSYCHODRAMA EFFECTIVENESS
Group 4 – European Research Projects: Cinzia Orlando (Italy); Gabriela Dima (Romania);
Galabina Tarashoeva (Bulgary); Ines Testoni (Italy); Marie Cassel (Sweden); Michael Wieser (Austria); Mihaela Bucuta (Romania)This group is preparing three research design projects and finding European Funds for implementing them.
Grundtvig Project
Was submitted in February and is waiting for approval. This project will follow a LIFELONG LEARNING PROGRAMME for two years.
The partnership main goal is to develop new and adequate teaching and educational skills for teachers and educators who work with disadvantaged categories. After a common planning and training in an international congress, the trainers will start a course in every partner country. The project includes 9 Psychodrama Associations and 7 countries.
Daphne Project
The candidature is in progress, the main goal is to contribute to the protection of children, young people and women against all forms of violence by taking preventive measures and by providing support and protection for victims and groups at risk.
Cost Project
The first aim was planning a research on the effectiveness of psychodrama - ANXIETY PROJECT, in clinical settings. This goal is not viable in the Cost funding, so the group discussed on how to go on with this projects: Good research design, but the main obstacle is funding.
Group 5 - Activating Research Activity: Anna Esposito (Italy), Ivan Fossati (Italy), Kate Kirk (UK), Gabriella Nicotra (Italy); Fabian Blobel (Switzerland), Cinzia Orlando (Italy)
This group is a place where those who are already doing research can find peers for discussing the research process. Each member presented, updated and improved their research projects.
In somehow some studies were clarified, methodologies and different research tools were proposed and discussed.
For further information about the work done take a look to the Boldern RC Minutes or follow our blog in http://feptoresearchcommittee.blogspot.com/
The research lines are not closed. For those colleagues interested in working in another Psychodrama field not included in those already open, you are very, very welcome!

Catania/Taormina meeting, October 2009 open pdf
Catania meeting - Sicily, in the city of Taormina at 16-18 October 2009. We were 25 persons and 11 countries were represented (Austria; Bulgaria; Finland; Italy; Portugal; Romania; Spain; Sweden; Switzerland; Turkish; UK).The main aim of this meeting was to work deeply in our previously organized working groups (Edinburgh, 2009) and, at same time to establish research lines for FEPTO.
We re
-organized the working groups according to what we have done and thought during the period in between these two meetings and also according to the new comer’s needs. Therefore, FEPTO has now the following research lines which congregate, so far, the different needs and motivations of the participant members:

5. International Research Project
1. Research Committee Agenda
Group Members; Gabriela Moita; Ann Helleday; Kate Kirk; Gabriella Nicotra
The main task of Research Committee is to improve Psychodrama Research. So we have to add to the current agenda the following steps:
• Facilitate the work of the working groups today organized in that meeting
• Give support to those working groups
• Facilitate communication between those groups and between RC and all FEPTO and outside
FEPTO
We propose the tasks below:
• Organizing next meeting – see which is the best time in October and best place
• The main purpose of that meeting will be working in those groups
• Propose each group have a case presentation on them topics
• Set up Google groups to facilitate communication
2. Research and Training Organizations
Group Members: Jutta Fürst; Emre Kapkin; Jose Luís Mesquita; Anna Esposito; Ivan Fossati; Marco Greco; Hannes Krall
Main purpose of the group:

• Developing ways to improve research skills in the training programmes of PD training
• Defining the content of this part of the training
• Finding out differences in the various institutes
• Developing methods of teaching
• Train the trainers
• Methodology
Next steps:
• Giving an explanation to the institutes why it is important teach research.
• Making a questionnaire with around some main questions like
- How do you teach research in your institute?
- Which difficulties?
- How can it be improved?
• Pilot project: 2-3 institutes are making some steps to implement research training, share the experiences and develop a model

4. Group of Planning Research on Psychodrama Effectiveness
Members: Ana Sofia, Daniele Reggianini, Anna Boeri, António Gonzalez
Aims:
• Create database of instruments for measuring Psychodrama outcomes in both clinical and non-clinical population;
• Facilitate the organization of National committees to coordinate research in each country.
5. International Research Project
Members: Michael Wieser, Gabriela Dima, Mihaela Bucuta, Maria Silvia Guglielmin, Marie Cassel, Ines Testoni
The main goals to set up an international research project are:
1. To show the effectiveness of psychodrama
2. To higher up the psychodrama name in the scientific world and among other psychotherapies
3. Improve training in psychodrama
Our main discussions were around research on:
- clients / patients with specific disorders (e.g. depression, psychosomatic)
- on prevention (e.g. in the field of death and dying – careers)
- on students – for the reason of the easy reach of this target group for all of us
Conclusions agreed:
1. To start on clinical samples in order to show the effectiveness of psychodrama in an area were other psychotherapies evidenced their effectiveness
2. Three potential research approaches:
A. One, same target group (e.g. depression) researched in more countries using the same research design. The advantage would be the possibility to draw comparisons and add to the existing RCT research another strong one to be able to reach the standards of being evaluated according to Roth & Pilling (as Elliott told us);
B. Different target groups (e.g. death and dying, depression, psychosomatic disorders) researched in different countries using the same research design.
The advantage would be the implementation of research on specific clients with which members are already working in their job or private practice; thus they are much motivated on results on their specific group and the target group is much easy to be reached.
C. Combining A & B: Same design implemented on two or three different target groups in each country part of the project
An important observation is that the role of therapist and researcher can be taken by different persons.
The next agreed step is circulate this summary of initiative and identify the FEPTO members opinions on the following questions:
1. Who wants to be part of an international research project?
2. Which is the approach favored by participants who want to take part (A, B or C)?
3. What are the target groups participants want to work on or do research (as the researcher can be another person than the psychodramatist leading the group?
4. Who has experience in writing international research projects?
